The  Mission Trip to Masara

Annually, medical professionals and other volunteers travel to Kenya to staff the clinic and visit the sponsored children of the village.  This fulfilling journey not only tends to the health of those in Kenya, but it feeds the soul of those that choose to give of their time and energy to help the people of Kenya.

These trips occur once or twice per year and are a joint function of CARE Kenya and SHARE Kenya.  SHARE Kenya is an Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine organization that uses this opportunity to help the underserved and promote international exposure of medical professionsals from OU and from other schools, including Ohio Northern School of Pharmacology.

The Fall of 2008 trip had 42 volunteers that included physicians, residents, medical students, pharmacy students, pharmacy faculty, EMS personnel and other volunteers.  It was a tremendous success in which 3,500 - 3,600 patients were attended to and 1,000 - 1,200 pairs of perscription glasses were given out.

As you would expect, the village has a pressing need for medical professionals.  Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners will find great reward in providing patient care at the clinic.  As our volunteer base grows we are hopeful to include a dentist and optometrist in our mix of providers within the next year.  There is much work to be done, and non-medical and medical personnel work side by side in their efforts to help.

If you are interested in an experience that will show you the heart of the Kenyan people and give you a new perspective, please contact us.  We have opportunities to help in many areas.  For details related to the costs associated with the trip, preparations to be made and another opinion of what to expect, please visit the OUCOM SHARE Kenya site for details.

If travel is not an option for you, donating to Care Kenya will help.  Care Kenya is predominately a volunteer organization.  We do have two full-time staff, both living in Kenya and managing the daily operations of the clinic.
